Choose a garage door opener that fits the door, the available space, and your daily routine. Drive type matters, but so do installation requirements, control compatibility, and the condition of the door it will operate.
Before replacing the opener, have any binding, imbalance, or damaged door components addressed. An opener is designed to move a properly functioning door, not compensate for a failing counterbalance system.
Start with fit and compatibility
Have the installer check door size and construction, track arrangement, ceiling and side clearance, mounting points, and electrical access. Use the installation specifications for the proposed model. There is no single headroom or side-clearance measurement that fits every opener.
If you want to reclaim overhead space, discuss whether a wall-mount model is compatible with the door and counterbalance arrangement. A high ceiling alone does not establish compatibility.
Compare the drive options
- Chain drive: a common overhead option worth comparing when cost and straightforward operation are priorities.
- Belt drive: often considered when reducing opener noise and vibration is important, especially near living space.
- Wall mount: can free ceiling space on compatible installations; the model’s door, shaft, and clearance requirements must be checked.
- Other or older drive systems: if replacing a screw-drive or another configuration, compare the proposed equipment and service support rather than assuming the same type must be installed again.

Compare operating features, not motor labels alone
Ask about rated application, speed, starting and stopping behavior, noise, and supported accessories on the exact model. AC and DC labels alone do not establish every operating characteristic. Likewise, a horsepower-style label is not a substitute for confirming that the opener is suitable for the door.
Choose controls for the household
List the remotes, exterior keypad, vehicle controls, and app access you want. Check compatibility before assuming an existing control will work with a new opener. Ask which accessories come with the quoted package and what costs extra.

Discuss backup power and safety
Ask how the proposed equipment works during a power outage, which backup features it includes, and what battery care is required. Have the installer explain the safety systems and demonstrate the tests specified in the manual.
A camera or connected app does not replace required safety devices. The installation should also include clear instructions for normal controls and the appropriate emergency-release procedure.

- Exact opener model and the door application it is being supplied for.
- Rail, mounting equipment, controls, and accessories included.
- Any repairs needed to the existing door.
- Removal, installation, setup, and user demonstration.
- Product warranty, labor coverage, and future service arrangements.
