If your garage door opens but will not close normally, the photo-eye safety sensors are one place to check. They monitor a beam across the doorway near the floor. An obstruction or sensor fault can prevent normal automatic closing.
Photo eyes do not monitor the entire garage or prove that every person, pet, or vehicle is clear. Keep the whole opening clear whenever the door moves.
Start with simple observations
- Move boxes, tools, leaves, and other objects away from the doorway and sensor beam.
- With the door stopped, gently remove dust or cobwebs from accessible sensor lenses using a soft cloth.
- Look for a knocked bracket or visibly damaged wire without disconnecting or altering it.
- Note when the problem occurs, including whether strong sunlight reaches one sensor.
- Record the indicator lights and the opener’s model number.
Light colors and flashing patterns vary. Use your opener’s manual to interpret them; a color that is normal on one model can mean something else on another. If a sensor is loose or damaged, arrange repair.
Test with an object, never your body
Follow the opener manufacturer’s photo-eye test. LiftMaster’s published safety check uses an object taller than the beam to block it before a close command; the door should remain open. Stand clear and keep everyone away from the opening. Do not use a foot or hand to interrupt a moving door.
Photo-eye testing and contact-reversal testing are separate checks. Use the exact test procedure for your opener. If either test fails, stop automatic operation and arrange service. See LiftMaster’s safety guidance and your model’s manual.
A wall-button workaround does not fix the sensors
Some openers behave differently when the wall button is held. Needing that workaround is a reason to diagnose the problem, not to keep operating a faulty safety system. Do not bypass sensors, move them out of position, or increase force to make the door close.
When the cause is elsewhere
A door can fail to close because of mechanical resistance, a damaged component, or an opener fault even when the lenses are clean. For other symptoms, use our garage door won’t close guide. If the door will not open at all, see opening problems instead.
