Understanding Garage Door Torsion Springs

Garage Door Torsion Springs

The Garage Door torsion springs  are a key part of the operation to your garage door. Harry Jr’s Garage Doors specialized in spring replacement in Lodi, Stockton Ca and surrounding areas  The torsion springs on your garage door take the weight off of your opener when opening and closing your door, taking all the weight off of your door so you can open and close it with ease and less strain on the motor.

The garage door torsion springs are usually located above the opening of your garage door in a horizontal position. The cables attached to the bottom corners of the garage door force the wind up of the springs when the garage door is closed. When the garage door is opened/ lifted, the springs start to unwind releasing the tension off of the springs. Your garage door springs will most likely break when the garage door in in the down position.

Over time of the garage door being lifted and shut, the metal steel eventually starts to weaken, especially in the hot heat that we encounter in the central valley (Lodi, Stockton, ect). Torsion springs usually last about 5-7 years depending on how often you open and close your door.  Springs typically have 10,000 cycles, opening and closing your garage door would equal 1 cycle.

When your garage door torsion springs does break, it can potentially be a very dangerous situation, as the door can fall and injure someone badly.  Due to the high amount of tension the coil springs have, when they do break a professional should be the one to remove and replace.  Harry Jr’s Garage Doors specialize in garage door torsion springs replacement in and around Lodi,  Stockton CA and surrounding areas.
